SGP on the WorldWideWeb
Due to the hypertext architecture of the Web, the web presentation of the Newsletter differs slightly from the printed version. In addition to the information included in the newsletter, the Web features an electronic guest book, SGP conference and journal information, links to other conference announcements, and to related areas of interest. Please sign the guest book to let us know that you have found us. Send your suggestions and comments regarding this site to Gregor Hens. Please also let us know of other worthwhile sites and connections so that we can add them to our page.
Only a few members responded to our query about receiving an electronic copy of the Newsletter. We want to remind members that electronic distribution is faster and helps defray costs. Please notify us, if you will be accessing the Newsletter on the Web or want to receive an electronic copy via email so that we can take you off the snail mail list.
Directory Planned
We are currently putting together a revised directory of members and would like to include email addresses. Please send us a quick message with your email address for inclusion to Anna Grotans. We will store this list for electronic distribution upon request. It will eventually be made available on the Web.

SGP Elections
According to article VI, section 1 of the bylaws of the Society of Germanic Philology, there shall be an election committee to solicit nominations and conduct elections for the Society's officers and members of the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee has appointed an election committee consisting of the Society's current vice president, Thomas F. Shannon (chair), Evelyn S. Firchow, and Paul T. Roberge.
This year the office of vice president will be contested, as will three seats on the Executive Committee, the terms of Edgar C. Polomé, Rosina Lippi-Green and Wilbur A. Beware expiring at the end of the calendar year.
Additionally, there will be a special election for the office of secretary/treasurer. Following article V, section 3 of the bylaws, the Executive Committee elected Robert Howell to serve as acting secretary/treasuer until an election by the membership can be held to fill the unexpired portion of the term of the vacant office.
The election committee invites nominations for these offices and for the three seats on the Executive Committee. Candidates for these offices must be willing and able (a) to attend GLAC so as to be present at the Society's Executive Committee meetings; and (b) to participate in the activities of the Society.
The committee is confident that there are a number of SGP members who would be willing to serve, if elected, and we hope that you will help us identify them. Your letter should indicate that your nominees have consented to having their names placed in nomination. Self-nominations are welcome.
Please send your nominations to Thomas F. Shannon by November 15 in care of the Department of German, University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA 94720-3243, USA; e-mail: tshannon@garnet.berkeley.edu.
SGP Bylaw Review
The SGP is establishing a committee to review the SocietyŐs bylaws and recommend emendations and/or additions to them. At this time the committee wishes to solicit input from the membership regarding areas of concern and possible recommendations for changes in the bylaws (copies can be obtained from the SGP secretary). Reactions and suggestions should be sent to Thomas F. Shannon.
