German Department Faculty on UW Madison Campus Voices: The University of Wisconsin-Madison Oral History Project was established as part of the University History Project in 1971. Its initial charge was to interview prominent emeritus faculty members about their research and careers at the University. Over the years, the Project became a part of the UW-Madison Archives, changed from a project to a program, and expanded its scope to include interviews with campus administrators, staff, and students as well as faculty. Taken individually, these interviews reflect the careers and interests of the interviewees; taken collectively they constitute a narrative of the development of the University over time. As such, they form an invaluable part of the historical record of the University in its over 160 years of existence. This is intended to be a growing collection with oral histories added on a regular basis. The inaugural batch includes interviews with historian GEORGE MOSSE and German scholar CORA LEE KLUGE, among others.  http://digital.library.wisc.edu/1711.dl/UW.UWCampusVoices

The Department of German is proud to host two post-doc research fellows funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn. The Feodor Lynen Fellows are:
    * Dr. Henning Wrage (Ph.D., Humboldt University, Berlin), working on a media history of postwar Germany under the mentorship of Professor Marc Silberman.
    * Dr. Rüdiger Singer (Ph.D., University of Göttingen), working on representations of actors in German texts under the mentorship of Professor Sabine Gross.
Both post-docs were attracted to the University of Wisconsin-Madison because of the excellent research library collections, strong collegial support in their fields and the UW’s reputation in European Studies.

The Department of German is pleased to announce that Emeritus Vilas Professor Jost Hermand, who taught a first-year lecture course on "Nazi Culture" in Spring 2009 (GER 272), was chosen for the University Housing's Honored Instructors Award in recognition of his "invaluable contribution to student learning".  Hermand joined the UW faculty in 1957, retired in 2004, and has lectured occasionally since then for undergraduate students.
