Undergraduate Program Information

Our extensive undergraduate offerings include courses in the languages, literatures, and cultures of the German, Dutch and Yiddish-speaking areas. Furthermore, in coordination with the UW Office of International Studies and Programs, the department works to provide study abroad opportunities for majors and non-majors alike. Undergraduate majors and non-majors, as well as prospective majors, should take a look at the Undergraduate Program Booklet. Information about placement can be found here.

50th Anniversary of Study Abroad Program in Freiburg
2010 marked the 50th anniversary of the UW-Madison’s study abroad program in Freiburg – a joint program with the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and the University of Iowa in which Madison sends the strongest contingent every year. Hundreds of UW-Madison undergrads from a wide range of majors have studied in Freiburg in the past half-century, and it is safe to say that the overwhelming majority of them regard their year abroad as the most broadening and memorable educational experience of their entire college career. AYF is an exchange program, and each year a number of Freiburg students study at Madison and the three other consortium universities. Madison and Freiburg were drawn even closer together when they formed a Sister City (Partnerstadt) association in 1988, and the groups in both cities organize an array of activities, some of them targeted specifically at incoming students from abroad. Each year, scholarships are granted to several UW-Madison students for their study abroad year in Freiburg, including funds from the Max Kade Foundation, the state of Baden-Württemberg, and endowments to the Department of German.
