Retro-credits:
Retro-credits are unique to the UW System and allow students to earn "back
credits". If you place into a certain course and earn a minimum grade of
B, you will receive (graded) credit for the course as well as (non-graded) credit
for all preceding language courses. For example, if you earn an A, AB, or B
in German 203, you receive graded credit for German 203 and non-graded credit
for German 101 and German 102. These retro-credits can not only help you fulfill
certain credit-load requirements but will also help you advance in your university
status. For example, you might be a sophomore by your second semester. Advancement
in university status brings registration privileges and helps you get into tightly-enrolled
classes - in turn, leading to quicker graduation.
However, retro-credits are not awarded automatically, merely by virtue of having
earned a sufficient grade. You must apply for retro-credits. Your teacher will
bring forms for you to fill out. However, ultimately it is your responsibility
to complete the necessary forms in time.
When placing into a course, consider whether you feel capable of earning a B
in the class. If you do not earn a B, you will still receive credit for the
course but no retro-credit. Your teachers will not be able to take into consideration
your desire for retro-credit when assigning your final course grade. You will
receive the grade you earned - regardless of its effects on retrocredits.
