Undergraduate New Major Requirements
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NEW GERMAN MAJOR AS OF FALL 2005
Please note that the Department of German is instituting a NEW major as of fall 2005. This major replaces the former three-track major. Additional information may be obtained from Professor Mark Louden. Prerequisites for admission to the German major are: (a) 221-222 or 274 or 284; and (b) 226.
The undergraduate major in German requires a minimum of 27 credits in advanced-level German courses. The courses presented for the major must include German 337 and the senior seminar 676. With the approval of the major advisor, up to 9 credits of the required 27 credits of course work may be taken outside the Department of German, generally selected from a list of cognate courses. These are courses with German-related subject matter in such departments as anthropology, art history, business, communication arts, folklore, geography, history, Jewish studies, medieval studies, music, philosophy, political science, sociology, theatre and drama, urban and regional planning, etc. German 676 and at least 3 additional credits of the required 27 credits must be taken on the Madison campus.
Also required are a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA on all work in the major and a grade of C or higher in all advanced-level German courses counted in fulfillment of major requirements.
AS OF FALL SEMESTER 2005, WE WILL NO LONGER BE OFFERING THE 4TH CREDIT FOR THE FOLLOWING COURSES: 226, 302, 303, 305, 337, 351, 352, 410, 411, 601. In fall semester 2005, the following courses will be offered for 3 credits only: 226, 305, 337. If a student completing the major under the old requirements needs a 4th credit, they should speak with their advisor and the instructor of the course regarding options.
