This course offers a survey of the immigration experience of Europeans from German-speaking lands. Who were they are why did they come to America? What kind of life and what problems and disappointments did they encounter? Historical, sociological, linguistic, and culturalaspects will be considered, in order both to gain insight into the greatest movement of peoples in modern times and to view the development of this country from a unique perspective. Open to freshmen. No German required. Counts as an elective toward the German major. Lecture, readings, and discussion. Exams, one paper, and a final.
